STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Chef Mauro “Max” Chiefari doesn’t consider himself a competitive guy. That’s why he was stunned to have won Juicy Lucy BBQ the title of “Brisket King 2019″ for New York City, a recent showdown curated by NYC BBQ.
In an Instagram post announcing the winner, NYC BBQ’s Sean Ludwig noted, “Upcoming Juicy Lucy BBQ shocked the crowd with its brisket and burnt ends.” Competitors included formidable eateries Hill Country and Dinosaur Bar-B-Que. The Staten Island contenders were invited to enter when another team dropped out.
Juicy Lucy BBQ is a restaurant coming to Ocean Breeze, site of the former Joe & John Toto’s. Co-owner Richie Holmes anticipates a May opening with his business partner Max as pitmaster. Clem Casserta Jr. will be the chef of the restaurant’s kitchen menu of mac ‘n’ cheese and other Southern-style sides and mains.
